The Michael Cleary Band has been performing for 20 years and their newest cd MCB Five is their finest yet. This disc is their first that is completely self produced and recorded in their own studio. Their efforts have resulted in a collection of songs described as an organic melting pot of great lyrics, catchy tunes, and sonic ear candy. The listener gets taken on a rolling journey from the opening chimes of the infectious “Mind Made Up” to the pulsing funk of “When you get back” thru poignant reflection in “Barfly” followed by the uplifting charm of “Cool Down”. Then, “You Got My Love” kicks in with an epic rock jam capped off with the Latin feel and tale of longing in “Away-O”. “Free James Brown” is the country flavored story of an unlikely fan of the Godfather of Soul, while “Highlight of My Day” is a toe-tapping celebration of the simpler things in life. The album concludes with the epic “See You in The Morning”. A bombastic rocker based on the Heavens Gate UFO cult. The music will draw you in but it’s the lyrics that will keep you coming back. Each repeat listening reveals a little more charm, subtle innuendos, witty turns of phrase, and glimpses of life, love, and adversity. The songwriting shines as the star of this disc and its a reflection of a band that is musically mature, diverse and skilled at their craft.
